Do You Need to Be Fit Before Hiring a Personal Trainer?

It's something I hear more often than you might think.

"I need to get a bit fitter before I start."

"I wouldn't be able to keep up."

"I'm worried I'll be terrible at everything!"

But here's the thing. If you were already confident, knew exactly what exercises to do and how to do them correctly, you probably wouldn't be looking for help in the first place!

Everybody Has to Start Somewhere

One of the biggest misconceptions about personal training is that it's only for people who are already fit, enjoy the gym or want to lift heavy weights.

It really isn't.

Some people want to improve their strength, others want to move more comfortably, build stamina, improve balance or simply feel a little more confident in themselves.

There isn't one correct starting point.

Personal Training Should Work Around You

When I work with someone new, I'm not expecting them to know how to squat properly, perform a press-up or understand which muscles they're supposed to be working.

That's what I'm there to help with!

Good personal training should take into account your current abilities, confidence, goals and any limitations you might have.

It's about finding movements that work for you, learning the correct techniques and gradually building from there.

And no, that doesn't mean I'm going to shout at you to do another ten burpees!

You Don't Need a Fancy Gym Either

Exercise isn't just about heavy weights and complicated equipment.

Movement, flexibility, balance, cardio and strength all have their place.

At Foxtailsfitness, I use a mixture of different exercises to help people become more comfortable and confident with movement.

Sometimes the simplest exercises are the most useful, especially when you're learning something new.

Confidence Comes With Practice

One of my favourite things about being a personal trainer is watching someone's confidence grow.

An exercise that seemed impossible a few weeks earlier suddenly feels a little easier.

Movements become more controlled, balance improves and people begin to understand what their bodies are capable of.

Those little improvements matter.

Not every achievement needs to involve lifting a heavier weight or completing a harder workout.

Sometimes simply feeling more comfortable moving your body is a brilliant achievement.

So, Should You Get Fit First?

No!

You don't need to reach a certain fitness level before asking for support.

You just need to be willing to start somewhere that feels manageable for you.

And if you're nervous, unsure or haven't exercised for years, that's absolutely fine.
